I agree, *provided* that we have a reasonable solution for the cross-compiling case.
(Since I don't think I ever cross-compiled Mercury, I don't think I can help on that score.)
However, if we don't, I am fine with committing the file as well, though in that case
the clean action would need to be modified to not delete the now git-controlled file.
