[m-dev.] Problem with guest CVS access

I'm working on a script at Monash that retrieves CLP(R) and the Mercury
extras from the Mercury CVS repository.

The following does not work:

$CVSROOT=":pserver:guest at cvs.mercury.cs.mu.oz.au:/home/mercury1/repository"
$CVS_RSH=ssh
$cvs -z6 login
Logging in to
:pserver:guest at cvs.mercury.cs.mu.oz.au:2401/home/mercury1/repository
CVS password: <<type in "guest">>
cvs [login aborted]: reading from server: Connection reset by peer

Trying to identify where the problem is, I tried the same thing from
ceres and got

cvs [login aborted]: received broken pipe signal

Can someone who understands CVS tell me what I need to do to fix things?
