The config.guess and  config.sub available from

ftp://ftp.aarnet.edu.au/%2Fpub/pub/gnu/config/

(and I guess other GNU mirrors) do the right thing. e.g.

% ./config.sub `./config.guess`
powerpc-apple-darwin1.3
