The specific request (mine) was for a warning when you type something
like `mmc --make foo.m' -- that is, when you accidentally name a source
file rather than a target file on the command line.

If `mmc --make foo' reports the same message in the common case
when `foo' happens to be up-to-date, then that dilutes the value
of the warning.  It would be much nicer if the message reported
in these two cases was different.
