What is the output from configure? I would bet it says that the installed
compiler is not sufficiently recent.

I believe all the versions whose label starts with 0.10 are from the release
branch. The current version on the CVS trunk cannot be compiled with any
version of the release branch, since we have had several bootstrapping changes
since 0.10 was released.

You will need to download a current release of the day (the most up to date
one on the web site is mercury-compiler-rotd-2002-01-29-unstable.tar.gz),
and install that.
