2 years ago, I did my graduate thesis on Mercury.  Mercury evolved quite a
lot since (unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to keep up with all the
changes), but at that time, I too needed a socket-interface on Mercury. (and
a database-interface with mini-sql too)
Because it didn't exist, I used the C-interface to handle the sockets and
the database-link, which worked quite well.
