Thanks Zoltan, This change is a good idea.  You can see my work so far on
the mutual recursion change on this branch if you want:

I often re-write history on my development branches.  I will do so again
this afternoon when I rebase it on top of the current master, now that
you've committed your work.

I looked at mlds.m to get an idea of the change, but I didn't review
anythign comprehensivelly.  mlds.m looks good.
