Seconded. While working on (debugging) the item list change,
I had to look at the full lists of items read in during the compilation
of  some modules, and many of those lists are far bigger than
one would expect. I would prefer not to increase their size if it
can be reasonably avoided. The builtin modules are the worst
in this respect: since users have no way of avoiding their inclusion,
any increase in their size slows down *every* compilation.
