[m-rev.] diff: optimize poly_infos

I measured the performance effect of this diff twice. Once it
showed no effect; once it showed a speedup of a bit more
than 1%. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

This was with a locally-installed compiler that inlines calls
to pointer_equal. Without that, this diff may produce a slight
slowdown.
