[m-rev.] [reuse] synchronize reuse branch with main branch

Hi,

I've managed to synchronize the reuse branch with the main branch
(snapshot of end of august). I haven't included the diff, it's gigantic,
but if anybody is interested, I'm ready to send it over... 

I will commit it (it's been fully tested with all the benchmarks I have
at hand for the reuse branch),
