[m-rev.] for review: make compiler use sub-modules

Zoltan asked whether using nested modules would slow down compilation
much.  I ran a couple of quick tests and it seems that it slows down
compilation by about 6%.

I will run some more detailed benchmarks later.

IMHO this is acceptable.  If anyone disagrees, now is the time to speak up...
