I only comment out the body of functions, that shouldn't cause any link
errors...

Oh. I've tried disabling the debuggers from the configure script but that
doesn't seem to make life any easier.

Any idea how to approach the register errors? I assume they're related to
some conflict with gcc global registers; would it help to have a newer
gcc?
