I just did a bootcheck in hlc.gc on Mojave and all tests passed (that's
Apple clang-1001.0.46.4).  I'm currently doing a bootcheck in none.gc,
but I expect that will pass as well.

I suggest bootchecking again with C compiler optimizations disabled,
and if you have access to a non-Apple C compiler, trying that.

(Mind you, I'm sure it's not beyond Apple's igenuity to break ungetc()
...)
