[m-dev.] Source tarball grades

Hi...

What compiler grade is used to produce the C files in the source tarball which
are used to bootstrap the compiler if it isn't already installed?
asm_fast.gc?

If so, how can one bootstrap the compiler on a machine without nonlocal goto
support?

(in this particular case I'm trying to build mercury on an ia64 (itanium)
linux machine. The first-stage compiler builds, but dies almost instantly
with an illegal instruction trap. I suspect the problem is that non-local
gotos don't work with the ia64's register stack, which I think is like
sparc's sliding register windows except variable in size)

=)
