It appears that if you do that then something doesn't get rebuilt
correctly.  I just tried rebuilding from the source distribution's
Mercury files, i.e. by unpacking the source distribution and doing
mmake realclean, and it all works fine.

I will look into this further later this week; in the meantime I suggest
making sure any generated files are removed from the source tree before
rebuilding.
