I don't know of any inherent reason why the Mercury standard library
can't be made to handle ISO-8859-1 characters. We simply aren't set up
to test character sets other than plain ASCII, and I have never had
to play around with locales before.

I will have a look at the problem early next week.

In the future, cc any email you send to mercury-bugs to me as well.
My records don't show any email from you to mercury-bugs in june.
