Back to the basics of functional programming for me.

You guys are too quick - I realised about 20 seconds
after I posted, but I couldn't even see my post yet...

I realised when I looked at my real code and saw that
the next line did a copy from the old input variable
to the new output variable.

Someday the smart questions will stop; probably
that'll mean I'm unconscious...
