Check out Mondrian, Eric Meijer's attempt at converting Haskell
into a scripting language. It has a fairly cute way of handling
declarative IO with minimum fuss.
But I was speaking tongue in cheek :)
That said, many Ocaml types claim to rarely resort to shell scripting
these days.
