Peter Schachte has proposed a nice extension to Mercury syntax
called "sequence quantification" that would make it possible
to express that kind of thing without using higher-order functions.
Peter Schachte used to hack Interlisp. This looks a lot like Interlisp
loops (and therefore a lot like loops in CLtL2). I can't help wondering
whether something modelled on "Series" (see CLtL2 for details) would fit
into Mercury.
(I used to hack Interlisp too. I don't think that looking like Interlisp
is bad, not at all.)
