Your suggestion is a good one. I'd still be sticking with my custom
code because in my specific case, the compiler wasn't doing enough
specialization.

This reminds me. Where is type specialization at? The test case I
refered to before does 1.7*10^8 map lookups. Specializing map on
the key type could well yield a significant speedup.
