[m-rev.] for post-commit review: record line numbers from first branches

After this diff, the compiler now reports information that is
sufficiently precise to let programmers avoid situations
like Mantis bug #585. The attached output from a debug stage 2
(with the diagnostic temporarily reenabled) shows this.
