[m-rev.] for review: uint ops in version_array2d.m

For review by anyone. What I most want to know is: does anyone know
of any tests for this module? I couldn't find any. I would prefer to commit
this diff only after it passes appropriate tests, but I don't know whether
there are any existing tests I can build upon.
