Trying to fix mmake --use-subdirs is likely to cause loss of hair.
Can we drop support for mmake --use-subdirs at some stage,
at which time we can stop creating those symlinks?
Assuming mmc --make is fixed first.

Right. At least cp doesn't dereference by default.
