I sent messages to m-rev with gzipped attachments before
without them being eaten. (Sometimes after an earlier email,
containing a too-large NON-gzipped attachment, WAS eaten.)
And the page at the link you provided does not say .gz files
are forbidden; it says that some file types are forbidden
*even if* they are gzipped.

Instead, I think the problem was that both attachments
had .complex suffixes, and .com is on the list of prohibited
extensions. Either some OS treats a file with a .complex
extension as one with a .com extension, or whoever at Google
who programmed the test on the suffixes is either overcautious,
incompetent, or both :-(
