[m-rev.] diff: impose structure on string.m

This diff has no algorithmic changes, although due to
giving a variable a better name, it would have had one
without the fix to the 2002 bug.

If anyone wants to do a post-commit review, the diff
is not the thing to read, since it is longer and much more
confusing than the new string.m.
