Why does it not build on sparc with solaris 10?  Has this been fixed 
upstream?  (If so, perhaps you should look at backporting the fix.)

Otherwise, if Makefile.am must change, then you should commit
the changed Makefile.in files that result too -- the source distribution
should not have to rely on automake being available.
