I don't know of any problems with --use-grade-subdirs itself.
It doesn't work so well on the compiler because the runtime and boehm_gc
directories don't understand grade subdirs yet. You have to run mmake
clean in those directories when changing grades. Some of the support
scripts need to be told about grade subdirs as well.
