[m-rev.] Summer Project

[Richard Fothergill]

Attached are the files I have been working on this summer. With the
exception of build_mode_constraints.m, the changes are extensive, so
I've posted the code instead of a diff.

This is not necessarily for committing - although I think it is almost
at a stage where it could be. Feedback appreciated.
