My change doesn't break forward compatibility for anyone who doesn't work
on the code of the compiler, and anyone in that boat is a developer who
should be able to take care of him/herself.

Well, (a) the feature was available for *two* weeks before I committed a diff
that used it, and (b) we have definitely had fewer than one such change per
month on average for as long as I can remember.
