I'm very happy to see the CTGC stuff finally making its way
towards the main branch.

A small suggestion with regard to the diff that you posted:
could you please use the "-u" option to CVS diff?
(You may want to put "diff -u" in your ~/.cvsrc,
or even better "diff -u -d -N".)
