The trouble with this is that there is always a lot of uncertainty in such
estimates.  It's nearly a month later, and we still don't have a working
solution.  That's three-and-a-half months for which the repository has
been broken.

So, shall I back out this change to the definition of io__stream now?
Or would you prefer to leave the repository broken for longer? ;-)
