I didn't review the details very carefully, but I think the approach is
sound, and since we're currently getting test case failures for these
tests in some grades, I think you may as well go ahead and commit it; it
should be an improvement on the status quo, and it won't matter too much
if we have to go a couple of iterations before we get all the bugs out.
