On a factual note, $(...) is part of the Single Unix Specification (and
presumably also POSIX) for the shell, not just a bashism.  It's present
in the HP-UX Bourne shell and ash, but not in the SunOS 5.8 /bin/sh that
I tried.

(This doesn't change the recommendation to change to `...` of course.)
