I committed that change on Monday. You can use 
`cvs co -r bootstrap_20011119_fullarch_opt mercury'
to checkout a version that won't have that test in configure.in.

Another option would be to use the installed compiler on one
of the other machines to compile stage 1.

How much time is enough? There was a full week between adding
the feature and adding the test for it.
