I don't think the HAL compiler makes any use of *that* var/1. (IIRC, that
var/1 was really just used to get the same effect as mode-specific clauses.
i.e. no run-time var tests or anything so horrid).
I can assure you that HAL has its own var/1-like constructs for doing such
horrid, Prologesque things as full run-time var tests, though. ;-)
