No, I was not referring to it inside a function.
The error was a missing quotation mark. My problem was that the error message
was pointing to the wrong file, because the missing quotation mark was on an
include statement. My unfamiliarity with php3 didn't allow me to conclude that
the error message was pointing to the wrong place.
With Fergus's help, I have found and fixed the bug and followed Pete's
recommendation after all in the version I committed.
