I mentioned "Documentation" which I think has these advantages
over both "READMES" and "guides":

  - it's somewhat conventional, e.g. used by the Linux kernel

  - the capitalisation helps it stand out in directory listings
    (in particular, it will be listed first on the github page)

  - the name is more generic, so as to hold more types of files
