I avoided READMES, readmes etc because there will still be a file called
README.md at the top-level.
By the way, we could also replace the HISTORY file with a HISTORY directory,

No objection from me. Obviously the parts of the existing HISTORY file that
are Markedown
could be placed in .md files within that directory.
