[m-dev.] mmc --make --use-grade-subdirs libxxx.install strange behaviour

mmc --make --use-grade-subdirs libxxx.install

does the expected thing and reuses the already compiled object files
in the grade subdirs, it however deletes those object files after
installing the grade, which in this case the wrong thing to do.
