I'm in trouble with gf for forgetting something, so I'll be with her for
much of today.

For search, I was thinking perhaps do construct path manually from
arcs (including line segments as notional special case) and
computationally refine them.  The manual solution does at least 
give a solution (avoids crashing), which is a good starting aim.
