[m-dev.] Commas considered optional

Can someone explain what the benefit of making commas optional is?  Is it
meant to make code easier to read?  Easier to type?  Easier to indent (since
lines are shorter)?  There should really be a cost/benefit analysis.  I can
see the costs, but I don't see the benefit.
