I found two articles on type checking that I found worthwhile:

http://perl.plover.com/yak/typing/typing.html - goes over type checking in C, Pascal, ML, and Perl. 

http://www.pragmaticprogrammer.com/cgi-local/pragprog?JavaIsUntyped - shows how Java's type checking isn't really type checking ni certain places!
