[m-dev.] spot the bug

The attached file segfaults when compiled with MSVC in realloc when
size=32.  AFAICT this is a library bug in the MSVC realloc
implementation, but to be sure I thought I would see if any other eyes
could see any spots where I could have stuffed up.
