[m-dev.] diff: clean up duplicated code in test_mercury

zs just pointed out there is a difference in the two routines, one
of them does `mmake install', the other doesn't.

The proper fix is probably to change the extras directories so they
all install.  However for the moment I'm going to leave it, perhaps
I will revisit the extras directory later on.  So this diff is not
going to be committed.
